Paper Butterfly Craft – Supplies

THE SUPPLIES:

  • Construction Paper
  • String or Ribbon

THE TOOLS:

  • Scissors
  • Ruler (Optional)

STEPS

STEP 1: Accordion Fold the Construction Paper

Optionally start with a ruler at one end and line it at one end of the paper. Start a single fold of the paper over the ruler (or make a fold roughly the size you’d like – this will be depth of the wings.

Flip the paper over and fold along the same line. Continue until you get to the end of the paper. Note: your last fold may not go all the way to end of the other side – that’s OK.

STEP 2: Make the Wings.

In this step, you’ll create the forewings (top portion) and the hindwing (bottom portion). The forewings are generally larger than the hindwings, so make the fold so that one end is slightly larger.

STEP 3: Repeat Steps 1 & 2

Repeat steps 1 & 2 so that you can have the other side of the butterfly. Note, you’ll want to make your wing-fold in a similar spot on the second wing, so that they look, for the most part, symmetrical.

STEP 4: Attach the two ‘wings’

Attach the two wings with a small piece of string. Tie the string in the ‘back’

STEP 5: The finished product!

Spread the ‘wings’ apart slightly and voila! you have a butterfly!

If you really want to get creative, you can draw, color, or add stickers to make the butterfly a bit more decorative.

And that is it! The process is fairly simple and the supplies don’t cost a ton, so you can make a whole flutter/kaleidoscope/group of butterflies!
