Inexpensive, Simple, Quick, $2, at Home Caterpillar Craft for Kids

Looking for a simple craft for your little butterfly enthusiast or want to integrate an easy activity into your butterfly-themed lesson? Try creating this caterpillar – the first stage of the butterfly. This one is extremely simple, not expensive, and takes less than 2 minutes to do.  Note, since you’ll be working with a toothpick, you may want to supervise younger children.

Caterpillar Craft – Supplies

THE SUPPLIES:

  • Toothpick
  • Approximately 4-6 Green Pom Poms (the amount will depend on the size)
  • A Red Pom Pom

STEPS

STEP 1: Create the body

First Pom Pom (Dark Green)

Second Pom Pom (Alternating Light Green)

We used glitter/sparkle pom poms and two shades of green to give our caterpillars a bit more ‘effect’, but regular pom poms will do nicely as well.

Start with the green pom pom and push it into the toothpick.  Move the pom pom to the end of the toothpick.  Repeat with green pom poms until there is only a spot for one more pom pom.

STEP 2: Add the head

Push the red pom pom into the toothpick.

STEP 3: The finished product!

That’s it!  A simple caterpillar in just a few minutes.  If you’ve got extra toothpicks and pom poms, you can create more.   You can also add googly eyes or pipe cleaners for antennas if you like.

Happy Creating!
