An Easy, Kid-Friendly, Fizzy New Years Eve Send Off!
Tagged Tags: , ,

Ring in the new year with some family-friendly, fizzy explosions!!!  If you’ve got some little ones on your hand, you might find yourself celebrating with a bit more confetti and messy fun year to year!  If you’re looking for some more activities, add this one to your list!  You’ll send off the year with some fun and fizz!  Read on to check out the fun!

This is a version of the baking soda, vinegar experiment with a New Year’s twist.  If your kiddos aren’t familiar with it & are on the younger side, it may be fun to label the ingredients to something more magical and fun (e.g. baking soda = snow, vinegar = magical solution).  If they’re a bit older, it’s a great time to explain the science behind it.  We’ve done this one a few times, so in this post, we kept everything as-is.  Either way, once the fizz starts, smiles are sure to follow 🙂

New Years Eve Fizzing Sendoff – Supplies

THE SUPPLIES:

  • Baking Soda
  • Vinegar
  • Sugar crystals, a packet of hot chocolate, juice mix, or any small colored powder-like ingredient.
  • Medium to Large Baking Dish

STEPS

STEP 1: Create the Baking Soda Layer

You can use as much baking soda or as little as you want to.  The more baking soda (and vinegar), the more fizz there will be, so plan accordingly!  (Our jugs of vinegar and boxes of baking soda seem to get bigger and multiply each year….)   Mix the baking soda with a little bit of water to make it packable.  Have the kiddos shape it into the baking dish.

STEP 2: Create the Top, Colorful Layer

Using your colorful powder or crystals, make a thin layer on top of the baking soda.  Then have your kids write out the current year in the colored layer (or a mini message if that’s what they’ll lean toward).  You should see the year, your word, or phrase in white.  Alternatively, you can use the colored sugar or powder to create the year, word, or phrase on top of the baking soda layer.

STEP 3: Let if Fizz!

Depending on how eager your child is and how much baking soda/vinegar you have, you may want to do this over the sink for easier cleanup….  🙂

Closer to midnight – or your chosen hour of celebration – add the vinegar to your creation and watch the previous year fizz!  Woohoo!  Happy New Year!
