Instill the Love of Reading – A Weeklong DIY Reading Camp

Welcome to our “Instill the Love of Reading – DIY At Home Reading Camp” series.  For this week, we focused on a few popular children’s series and paired those days with crafts, activities, and games that went along with those books!

Feel free to pick certain days or follow the entire week – as long as it gets the kiddos to LOVE reading and all those wonderful stories 🙂

DAY ONE: Set-up the “Camp Area”

We usually start of the week by introducing the topic and setting up the camp area. It’s a pretty easy day (think of it like the first day of school – a day to get acclimated 🙂 )

Day 1 for our Reading Camp focused on a few things: Setting up our Reading Nook, Creating a Learning Tree, and snacking on pencils :). Click on each activity to view tutorials.

DAY TWO: A Hungry Caterpillar Day

For Day 2, we turned to the wonderful world of Eric Carle, his famous Hungry Caterpillar, and a few of his other books! We filled the day with fun butterfly and caterpillar crafts as well as trying out Eric Carle’s very own technique of illustrating. We also watched an author interview as well as created a few edible caterpillars for snack time. And, of course, we read a few of his books! Check out a more detailed description of our Hungry Caterpillar Day here!

DAY 3: A Day of Dog Man

For Day 3, we turned to the super-popular world of Dog Man! We filled the day with fun activities from the website as well as writing prompts, reading time, and Hot Dog snack-time 🙂 Check out a more detailed description of our Day of Dog Man here.

DAY 4: A Day with Pigeon

For Day 4, we turned to the wonderful world of Mo Williems, his beloved pigeon, and friends like Elephant and Piggie!  We filled the day with tons of activities from Pigeon’s site as well as reading time, writing prompts, and a few hours of baking. Check out a more detailed description of a Day with Pigeon here.

DAY 5: A Day with Harry Potter

For Day 5, we turned the magical world of Harry Potter! If you’ve seen any parties from our site, you’ll know that Harry Potter has been a constant friend throughout the years (Check out our other Harry Potter Posts if you’re in need of some magical ideas). We pulled quite a few of the easier ideas from there as well as the Wizard World website. Check out a more detailed description of our Day with Harry Potter here.
