A Sweet & Simple, Budget-Friendly Mermaid Party in Your Backyard

Planning a simple, budget-friendly mermaid-themed party for your little one?  Need a few ideas on inexpensive decorations, crafts, games, water-soaked fun, favors, and more? Check out our post here!

We created some image labels to go along with some of the food and activities with this party. Feel free to check them out here. Also, if you’re looking for more Mermaid Ideas, feel free to check out our other articles here!

DECOR

We created a few Mermaid Printables, which you can find here.  They went along with our blue, purple, and pink decorations (balloons and streamers) and added some extra decor to the party.

We also had some Glitter Foam Sea Life Stickers as well as some Blue Acrylic Gems that we sprinkled all over the tables.  We purchased most of the tableware (plates, napkins, mermaid cups, and plasticware) from the Dollar Store – we did have a much smaller group, so we didn’t have to buy in bulk for this one.

We set out a few mermaid themed puzzles (nothing higher than 100 count but most less).  By the end of the party, we had tables filled with completed / mostly completed mermaid puzzles!

CRAFTS

We had a few crafts (though these did involve some supervision – painting & ironing) but kept the young ones busy for the most part.

  • Mermaid Painting Station: We actually had two things for them (both from the Dollar Store).  We had a mermaid suncatcher as well as some wooden shaped mermaids, which came in a pack of 5.  We laid out some washable paint, spread out a spare plastic tablecloth on the floor, & let their imaginations run!
  • Ocean Perler Beads: We picked up a few Perler Beads Ocean Buddies Kits and an extra bucket of beads.  This actually kept the kids entertained for quite a bit.  The only downside was having to walk to the room with the iron (as we kept that away from the kids/party area for safety).

FOOD & DRINKS

So we did go the seafood route with this one but had some staple party food for our younger guests.

Appetizers:

  • Goldfish
  • Crab Cakes
  • Popcorn Shrimp
  • Sauteed Spinach (which we labelled sea-weed)

Main Course:

GAMES

We had this party during the summer, so backyard, bubbles, and water fun was a must for this mermaid party!  Once they wanted to move on from the crafts, we took them out for a bit of backyard fun.

  • Mermaid Races – We did splurge a bit on getting a Mermaid Pillow Case but had a few Dollar Store Pillow Cases to pass around (just note: if you buy it online, you have to have a minimum quantity but you can just get as many as you need in the store).  Instead of running, we had two lines of guests, two cups, and two buckets on the other end.  And, you might have guessed – but the person in the front of the line had to step into the “mermaid tail” (pillow case), bring the small cup of water to the other end, and fill up the bucket.  First team that filled their bucket won 😉
  • Once that bucket was filled, we added in a few Mermaid Magic Towels (also from the Dollar Store).  This never ceases to amaze the younger kids 🙂
  • Bubble Fun.  The glitter bubbles were new for us but we also had large bubble wands for everyone to play in.  If you’ve got little ones in your group, bubbles are ALWAYS fun!
  • And last but not least, the sprinklers and buckets of water were turned on so they could cool off (We did let guests know we’d planned this portion, so all kids had towels and a change of clothes)

GOODIE BAGS

If you want to keep in theme when your guests leave, sprinkle in some water-filled fun items for their goodie bag along with any of the regular candy or hand outs you want to give out.

For this party, we added glitter bubbles, mermaid flip flops, a mermaid journal & blue pens, and a good stash of candy 🙂   And of course, they got to keep all the things they made during the party!
