Shiver Me Timbers: It’s Pirate Week – Amazing At Home Camp

Welcome to our “Shiver Me Timbers – Pirate Week” – an at home camp filled with days of relaxed learning and fun themed activities all themed to oh-so-fascinating Pirates!   We mixed in some great learning fun by reading about historical pirates and pirate life, learning all about pirate ships & creating our own models, exploring nautical navigation, and created some treasure maps and coded messages!

Read through to check out our ideas on ways to decorate your camp area, find links to fun & educational videos, books – fiction and non-fiction, writing prompts or story telling ideas, science experiments, food crafts & snacks, and kid-friendly crafts all themed for the week!

DAY ONE: An Introductory Day

Like most of our at home camp weeks, we kicked off the week by easing into the topic.  For our first day, we learned some pirate lingo, set up our camp space, and introduced the basic history of pirates through some great books! We even created a ‘pirate ship’ out of upcycled, large cardboard boxes so that we could have some imaginative play every day! Click here to check out full details of the day!

DAY TWO: Pirates & Pirate Life

For this day, we dove into history to learn about some actual pirates and pirate life – what did they eat, what types of jobs did they have, what’s the difference between a privateer and a buccaneer, and more! Click here to check out full details of the day!

DAY THREE: Spectacular Ships

For this day, we took a closer look at spectacular pirate ships! We had a bit of fun debunking some myths and getting to the truth of what pirate ships looked like and what they actually carried. Click here to check out full details of the day!

DAY FOUR: Nautical Navigation

For this day, we took a closer look at navigation and the tools pirates used to find their way! We checked out tools pirates used to find their way from point A to point B – telescopes, compasses, sextants, and more! Click here to check out full details of the day!

DAY FIVE: Treasure & Treasure Maps

For this day, we had tons of fun learning all about cartography, treasure maps, and whether or not pirates actually hid their treasure! Click here to check out full details of the day!

FINISH OFF THE WEEK

Now that you’ve learned all about pirates, take your upcycled pirate ship and (pretend-play) live out a pirate day! It’s a great way for kids to integrate what they’ve learned, use some of the pirate lingo, and create their own stories using the pirate theme!

Also, most of us likely do not live near any pirate ships, but if you’re lucky enough to live close to any museums with pirate exhibits or museums dedicated to pirates completely, a trip out may be well worth it! If not, there are no shortage of pirate cartoons or films out there to wrap up pirate with with a family movie night!
